The book ‘In the Early Hours’ is a collection of practical advice on spiritual and personal development from an Islamic perspective by Ustadh Khuram Murad (1932-1996). This was a series of talks which he gave as part of a course in Leicester which was then compiled and edited by Riza Khan in the form of this book.

The main aim of the book is to help the believer achieve the most important purpose of life: Gaining Allah’s Pleasure, and entering Jannah.

The book mentions that one must strive for this goal by fulfilling our obligations and responsibilities, and by purifying the heart through dhikr (remembrance of Allah). In this journey of moving closer to Allah, the author describes certain characteristics like pride, hypocrisy, pessimism, uncontrollable anger, bad tongue, and following lustful passions, that we must be careful of as they hinder our progress.

He emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities towards our relationships and other members of the society. In order to be the best version of ourselves, the author reminds us that we have Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as the best example to follow.

The book is divided into seven main chapters namely:

  1. The Process of Self Development
  2. A Life of Remembrance
  3. Relating to Allah
  4. Relating to Allah’s Messenger
  5. Spending in the Way of Allah
  6. Relating to Allah’s Creation
  7. Meeting Allah

Each chapter is subdivided into headings which makes it easier to comprehend and understand. Other important topics discussed in the book are: reliance on Allah, gratitude, patience, methods of dhikr, best use of time, spending on others, love of this world, etc.

The best way to read this book would be by reading one chapter, reflect on it and try to incorporate it in our personality. The book not only tells us what to do, but also how to do it.

Each chapter ends with a summary and a dua. The book quotes references from the Quran, sunnah & hadith. It has a recommended reading list at the end, as well as an index of quranic verses referenced in the book.

This book is loaded with practical gems and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to take the first step in embarking on the path to improve not only their spiritual self but their whole personality as well.
