‘Dawood Loves His Books’ is a rhyming book written by debut author Umm Marwan Ibrahim. It is about an inquisitive boy named Dawood who loves books even though he cannot read yet. One day he sees a book at the top-most shelf and asks his mother about it. The book was the Quran.
What follows is a lovely conversation between him and his mother who tells him about Allah, His creations, the importance of the Quran, the language it is written in and the messages Allah gives us through it. She then recites Surah Iklaas and tells him about Allah and His Oneness. After learning all this from his mother, it touches his heart and the Quran becomes his favorite book.
Key Islamic words and concepts mentioned in the book are Allah, His Names, Allah’s creation, Prophets, aakihrah (life after death), and jannah (paradise).
The end of the book consists of insightful questions for the children which makes the book interactive.
The author has also prepared interesting activity sheets for the children that can be accessed via a QR code. Activities include coloring pages, crossword puzzle, word search, matching and circling.
This book will be very useful to introduce children to Allah, His Characteristics, the Quran, the language it is revealed in and the messages it contains.
Through the storyline in her book, I liked how the author subtly touches upon important parenting techniques like:
- Parents are and should be positive role models for children. Generally, children learn more, by watching, than by being told to do something.
- Parents should be first source through which children learn about our religion, Islam.
- Parents should have regular conversations and discussions with children at home.
- It is important to have a library in the house that stocks interesting and beneficial Islamic as well as secular books.
I love the whole layout of the book, simplicity of language, font style, illustrations and the color scheme used.
